Too cool: 5 awesome ways to cool down in the summer months

Aussie summers can be damn hot. Whether you’re cooking your feet on the hot concrete, roasting away in the midday sun, taking a free sauna in a stuffy sedan or simply languishing in the living room, we know that once it gets up to that 35 degree mark things are getting pretty steamy!

It’s for this ghastly heat that we have always prioritised reasons to keep cool even when the sun was like, “nope, not today! I’m going to do everything in my infinite power to let you cook!”

With this in mind, here are five of the most simple (and extravagant) ways we can work to keep ourselves cool in the crazy hot months of the year:

  1. Invest in a pool!

Because the best Northern Beach pool builders have a way of making that toasty feeling go away and go away for good. After all, who doesn’t want to experience the joys of stepping into the backyard, across the lawn, through the gate and dropping right into their very own swimming pool?

Not only is the legendary piscina a great respite from the Sydney summer sun, it is also a great investment in your health (getting a serious cardio/muscle workout in!) as well as your home, greatly increasing the resale value in a way that other home renovations simply can’t!

  1. Head to the beach

Because Sydney is blessed with Australia’s most stunning beaches (sorry Perth, nice try Adelaide and don’t make us laugh, Melbourne!). Whether it’s a balmy arvo on Bondi or meandering along Manly, we are incredibly spoiled for choice when it comes to great places to refresh our senses in the summer sun.

Sure, Sydney’s beaches can get pretty crowded at times, but this only creates a desire to check out some of our city’s lesser known-but-equally-as-impressive outliers, the likes of Camp Cove and Palm Beach being some dream Aussie havens for splashing about and soaking up the gorgeous sunlight!

  1. Wear loose-fitting clothing

Breathable, lightweight fabrics are truly one of the best ways to keep cool on a hot summer’s arvo. The last thing you want is to be caught out between the sun and the hot concrete, wearing your tightest fitting jeans and top – these work like nothing more than heat insulators for your pool legs and torso!

Instead, it’s always a good option to go with light, loose-fitting fabrics, the kind that will ensure that any light breeze that comes flowing through will be greatly appreciated!

  1. Stay hydrated

Because being dehydrated on a hot summer’s day is one of the best ways to maintain a healthy body temperature, keep the joints moving well, keep the nutrients flowing and basically keep your system running at top capacity. When we become dehydrated, our bodies become susceptible to all kinds of ailments, and we are at greater risk of dehydration in the heat.

With all this in mind, be sure to keep the water flowing when spending a day frollicking on the sand!

  1. Eat light meals

Eating heavy meals in the heat isn’t a mix. Like, come on, it’s not as if eating roast, mash and gravy in the sun is the best way to keep our bodies cool (as delicious as it is!) so it is always recommended to keep the meals light until you’re at least out of the worst of the heat.
