About the designer

Norman Cherner was a trailblazer in the prefab industry when it was originally finding its footing in the world. He envisioned affordability within the housing and furniture genre, and was also an advent follower of the Bauhaus movement. Throughout his life, he explored various facets of furniture design, including but not limited to shelving, lighting, and even toys. His interest in low-cost modular dwellings led him to write about his theories in books like How to Build a House for Less than $6000 (1960). However, he is best known for his Cherner collection, of which we’ll be looking at the counter stool in detail .

The Cherner counter stool is a molded plywood wonder that is both famous and infamous in its own right. Its sleek curvature and distinct material choice makes it one of the best midcentury modern piece this side of the 2000’s.

The Cherner chair and accoutrements originally rose in popularity by their appearance in Norman Rockwell’s painting called ‘The Artist at Work.’ This painting was featured in the Saturday Evening Post, and subsequently became the catalyst for how Cherner found out about the following fraud that was happening during the chair’s initial production.

Basic controversies

The Cherner counter stool was first created for Plycraft – a manufacturing company that he later sued. This was because the owner originally told Norman Cherner that his design had been scrapped, yet he continued to produce it while rendering himself as the designer. Cherner was later paid the royalties until the chair went out of production in early 1970s. It wasn’t until the year 1999 when Cherner’s sons formed the Cherner Chair Company and revived the original designs of their father’s chair.

The Cherner stool is constructed fully out of molded plywood. However, it is not entirely of one thickness. In fact, it graduates in breadth at the edges – where it is thinner – to a more impressive bandwidth of 15 ply at the waist. It is also structurally supported with a solid steel crossbar. The overall form and shape of this stool are incredibly distinct, boast a great structural integrity, and can be used as a gorgeous design element wherever you place them.
