Part of being a homeowner, or renter, means you’ll have to endure the tedious task of cleaning your home from the inside out. So, what happens if you start to notice water spots or debris collecting on the outside of your windows or within your windowsill, and what type of products should you use? Follow these easy steps to keep your double-hung windows clean and you’ll have one less worry on cleaning day!

How to clean a double-hung window

To start, you’ll want to unlock your windows via moving the latches inwards. This will allow you to raise your bottom sash up.

Next, locate the tilt hatches on the bottom sash and pull inwards. You should be able to tilt the window 90-degrees forward towards the inside of your home. Be careful not to go forward too far or you’ll risk damaging your window.

Once you’ve made it this far, repeat the same steps you just took with your bottom sash for your top sash.

Using Windex, vinegar with newspaper, or Dawn dish soap and water – clean then interior top sash and then slide back into the frame so you can begin cleaning the exterior. Repeat and clean the bottom sash. Once both sashes are clean to your standards it’s time to put them back in place.

Don’t forget to clean your window seals and the frames while you’re at it. For wooden frames, use a wood polish or dust cloth.

Keeping your windows clean

To best keep your double-hung or other custom windows clean, it’s recommended to clean the glass part of your windows when you clean your home. It’s not necessary to deep clean them to this extent every week during your cleaning hour but every 2-3 months is a good rule of thumb. Maintaining your cleaning will stop your windows from collecting debris in your seals that could cause allergens to enter your home.
