When it comes to granny flats Victoria has been leading the way for a number of years now in terms of the number of people who want this kind of structure built, and in terms of those companies who will build it. The desire amongst many, especially those who are looking to downsize or to simply live a more affordable lifestyle, is building a granny flat on a budget. The first thought which many people have is to build the granny flat on their own, and that is certainly an option worth considering if you have some experience in construction. There are additional ways in which you can complete an affordable granny flat, however, and here are some ideas to do just that.

DIY vs Outsource

As mentioned there is a real temptation to get on with this build on your own but if you do not have any experience in doing so then you may end up finding that the overall build costs you more than if you were to outsource. Making expensive mistakes or getting materials wrong can cost a lot of money, but there is another option. Outsourcing doesn’t mean that you hand off control of your granny flat build completely, and you can still be very much in charge of what materials are used and who completes the build, to help bring the costs down. Generally speaking, granny flats cost around $70,000 to construct, and 25% of that fee is the construction costs, if you have got experience and skills, that is what you may be able to save.

Bare Minimum

A granny flat which is livable can actually be constructed very quickly and on a budget and although that may mean that you won’t get all of the personal touches which you would like to make, it could be the perfect idea in the short term, and consider the extras for the future. This will slow down the process of course but it will mean that you can get into your home quickly and at low cost, whilst you save up some more money to add on all of the features which you would love to have in your very own granny flat.

Flatpack

One option which you could look at for your granny flat if you are trying to keep the budget down is to buy a pre-made granny flat which comes in flatpack form. This will still need some skill to construct and to connect to all of the utilities, but it will massively reduce your overall construction costs. Not only this, but the home will also be up in no time at all, usually within a week once the pieces have been delivered. If you want to custom make this it will cost you quite a bit but there are many pre-designed granny flats which cost a lot less, and this could be the perfect way for you to get that budget granny flat which you have been looking for.

There are ways to do this without breaking the bank, weigh up your options and then make a decision which suits you and your budget.
